Seabury’s annual Holiday Performing Arts Concert, a perennial sell-out, features all levels of our dance program, along with music and drama guest performances.
For two nights only in Seabury’s award-winning ‘A’ali’ikūhonua Creative Arts Center, enjoy complimentary desserts and beverages in the lobby and celebrate the performing arts with its most fierce supporters – our students!
Director of Dance David Ward is celebrating the 30th anniversary of this annual holiday spectacular with his Company dancers by restaging Chairs & Stools: A tribute to Bob Fosse.
“From early on in my dance training, I fell in love with the theatrical style of Fosse choreography,” says Ward. “The powerful simplicity of a hip-roll, shoulder placement, or hand- gesture spoke volumes of how ‘less is more.’” A brilliant master of musical theater, Fosse’s influence continues today.
“My first experience seeing Fosse’s work was the films Sweet Charityand the Academy Award winning Cabaret, which inspired me to do musical theater. Then in 1976, as a sophomore in high school, I went to NYC with my drama class and saw the original Chicago directed and choreographed by Fosse. My life’s path was set, no turning back!”
Also in Dance, Choreographer Andre Morissette brings back his Modern dance, H20.“Created in 2002, H2O is a part of a larger work exploring the four elements of nature,” says Morissette. “It is a study of water and its distinctive qualities.” His other piece is Mambo Italiano(2009), a delightful romp about dating.
In the spirit of the Holiday Season, our Ballet teacher Vanessa Cerrito has choreographed two pieces to Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. Ballet 3/4 will be performing Cerrito's slinky serpent like version of "Arabian" and our Beginning Ballet class will bring a winter wonderland to Seabury Hall in "Waltz of the Snowflakes."
In Drama, we reprise several numbers from our recent musical sensation, Catch Me If You Can. “Following the great success of the show, we wanted to give these kids one more opportunity to showcase their talents,” says Ward.
Our Upper School chorus under the direction of the fabulous Molly Schad will perform some holiday music.
Our Middle School Drama program is gearing up for a production of Music Man Jr. directed by Marsha Kelly with and Molly Schad. You wll get to see a sneak-peek of this American classic.
Finally, a special guest performance from the amazing Innes Asher on Bagpipes. This has become an annual tradition in the Holiday Performing Arts Concert. Ever since Innes was in 8thgrade, he has surprised our audiences with his masterful skill. Now as a senior, this will be his final performance with us.
“When I see Innes perform on Bagpipes, I’m taken back two thousand years to his ancestral Scotland.”
Demand for seats runs high for this one weekend only affair -- so reservations are recommended.
