Friends, we know, I think instinctively, that peace begins with us. Yes, peace begins with me. #WordsMatter. Every time I choose a kind word over a harsh word. Peace begins with me. Every time I say “please” and “thank you,” peace begins with me. Every time I pick up trash, or don’t cut in line at lunch, every time I drive safely and let cars in ahead of me. Peace begins with me. Every time I say, “I love you,” “I appreciate you.” “I’m so glad we are doing this together.” Peace begins with me.
Friends, I’m so glad we are celebrating the International Day of Peace together. And we are not alone. There are many examples of activities and celebrations, music, and dance, that will go on around the world today. There are things happening today and this week right in our neighborhood and on our island.
As you leave campus today, you may drive past the Makawao Buddhist Temple, where they will have a special peace day service this morning with the traditional ringing of bells together with this beautiful display of origami cranes. On Saturday, Imua Discovery Garden is having a Rally Around Peace gathering with live music to which everyone is invited. And shortly, Ms. Nelson will share opportunities we have right here on campus, simple ways that we can celebrate in joy and hope that peace begins with us. Peace begins with me.
It is the United Nations that invites us and the world to observe the International Day of Peace. Currently, there are over eighty-seven thousand UN peacekeeping personnel serving in twelve separate operations around the world. These peacekeepers protect civilians, monitor human rights, oversee elections, and support the implementation of systems that make for healthier, more peace-filled countries and communities. These peacekeepers sacrifice much to be a part of this work, spending many months away from loved ones to keep others safe and free. Together, they remind us that “Peace begins with me.”
