First All-School Assembly of the Year Reflection

Father Christopher Golding
Friends, there is a tale as old as time, a story that tells of someone called Elijah who had a wonderful and mysterious encounter with God.
One day God said to Elijah, “Go out of the cave, Elijah,
and I will reveal my full presence to you.”
Indeed, God sincerely promised to Elijah,
“I will pass by you and reveal my fullest, truest self.”
Just then, a very strong wind tore through the mountains.
But God wasn’t in the wind.
After the wind, there was an earthquake.
But God wasn’t in the earthquake.
After the earthquake, there was a fire.
But God wasn’t in the fire.
After the fire, everything stopped.
And into that space came the sound of sheer silence,
thin and quiet …
When Elijah experienced the silence, they knew that God’s fullest, truest self was there. God was in the beautiful silence.
God was safely there. In love. In joy. In peace. And in hope.

In the wake of the Maui fires, we hold our beloved island to ourselves.
We hold all first responders and volunteers.
We hold all those who have evacuated.
We hold all those who have lost their homes
and places of work and rest.
We hold all those who have died, and those who mourn.

And in this moment of silence, let us place them safely there.
Safely there into this beautiful sheer silence, thin and quiet–
a space of love, of joy, of peace, and of hope.

30-45 seconds of silence
Where two or three are gathered. Love is there.
Where two or three are gathered. Joy is there.
Where two or three are gathered. Peace is there.
Where two or three are gathered. Hope is there.

Yet gathered here together this morning,
we are many more than just two or three!

So, at the start of this school year, we are stronger
in love,
in joy,
in peace,
in hope
because we are together.
For together, we are #MauiStrong.
